Was Kaneko inspired by the success of Sonic the Hedgehogand intent on creating an “animal with attitude” character of its own? Quite possibly. Later ported to the Sega Game Gear by Kaneko itself, Berlin Wall was mysteriously altered for the Genesis, where it was given a new title and an entirely different central character – a crocodile (“wani” being the Japanese word for crocodile). In 1991, Japanese studio Kaneko created an arcade game called The Berlin Wall – a revival of the old Space Panicgame with better graphics, end-of-world bosses, and lots of power-ups. If you’re into collecting things, the box looks great, too. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos (yes, really).Įl Viento may desperately want to be a Castlevaniabeater, but it’s more akin to a ’90s straight-to-video movie, which oddly enough, is actually a recommendation. You play Annet, a heroine armed with magic and boomerangs, of all things, who’s on a mission to save 1920s America from Al Capone and ancient, evil gods from H.P. El VientoĪdmittedly, the hack-and-slash action in this Wolf Team game is pretty generic, but there’s something so batty about El Viento that it’s worth recommending despite its flaws. With apologies if we’ve missed any of your favorites, here’s our selection of 50 Sega Genesis games that never quite got the mega-selling attention they deserved… 50. Yet, while Sonic and several other core hits were responsible for selling a legion of systems, there was also a range of other cracking titles among the Genesis’ hundreds of releases. Although it faced tougher competition in Japan from Nintendo’s Super Nintendo, games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and a range of licensed sports titles made the Genesis a zeitgeist-grabbing hit in the west. The Sega Genesis became a hugely popular console in America and Europe.
#Obscure 2 mega code
What is it with Sega and misplacing relics from its past? Hopefully, this paves the way for some kind of Saturn Mini release containing Panzer Dragoon Saga, although considering the source code has been lost, that's not looking likely. In the late ’80s and ’90s, Sega enjoyed a golden period of success. Sadly, it doesn't seem to be included in the Genesis Mini 2 release. The Sega Genesis Mini 2 game list includes titles like the obscure cult classic Crusader of Centy.Īlongside the actual game, a hint book was released in 1995, and amusingly enough, the hint book is now also a collector's item because it was available in limited quantities via mail order. It might be helpful to think of Crusader of Centy as the Genesis' Panzer Dragoon Saga in that it's a cult RPG that reviewed well, sold poorly, and became super-valuable after launch. It sold pretty poorly when it launched in 1995, although it fared rather better in reviews, and since launch, it's become something of a sought-after title, with graded copies now reaching over $4,000 in the second-hand market. One of the Sega Genesis Mini 2 games that's getting some attention is Crusader of Centy, which is an obscure old-school RPG from the mid-90s. What is Crusader of Centy and why should you care about it?

It's also nice to see some obscure stuff on here like Crusader of Centy and Devi & Pii, so there should be something here for you even if you think you've played everything Sega has to offer. Still, it's a pretty impressive lineup for retro fans to sink their teeth into, and there's very little overlap with the original Genesis Mini, which is good. This list notably excludes a couple of the games announced as part of the Japanese Mega Drive 2 lineup, including Shin Megami Tensei, Lunar, and Snatcher.

Here, for your perusal, is the full Genesis Mini 2 game list. In the meantime, though, the games that have been revealed should give you more than enough to be getting on with. We don't know what that one is yet, though, so we're going to have to wait until closer to release to get more info on it.

There's also a rather exciting unrevealed game, which Sega describes as an "extra bonus game".
